If you’re reading this site, and therefore interested in how to pack a backpack efficiently, and what the deal with Couchsurfing is (free accommodation?! Where can I sign up?!?) then staying at any of the hotels in this list is probably not on the immediate horizon for you.
Still, a backpacker’s gotta dream, right? We all like to keep wish lists, or imagine where we’d enjoy our holidays if money was no object. Where the trip is as much about the hotel as it is about the destination.
With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of our top five luxury hotels from around the world. The kind of hotels where you’d be happy to never even leave your room.
Qualia was just voted Number 1 in the Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards this year. The resort’s 60 private pavilions make the most of their Coral Seas views – all feature floor to ceiling windows. While you might be tempted to spend all day lounging by your private plunge pool, there’s no end of water-based activities on offer, what with the Great Barrier Reef being right on your doorstop and all.
The Ritz is the most iconic hotel in Paris. Closed since August this year for renovations – the Ritz is set to reopen in late 2014 in what is sure to be the most anticipated refurbishment of the century. It’s not just the rooms you stay at the Ritz for – although they are magnificent – but the history. Coco Chanel, after all, called the hotel “ma maison” and Princess Diana spent her last night here.
Bora Bora is paradise on earth. Does it get much better than staying in your own over-water bungalow? We think not. Complimentary activities on offer include paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing. Alternatively, you may wish to indulge in a hot stone massage, or enjoy a three course dinner cooked for you in your own bungalow.
The Burj takes opulence to a whole another level. The building, designed to look like a billowing sail, soars 321 metres into the city skyline. However, it’s the interiors that really impresses, with rooms fitted out with marble flooring and mahogany furniture. The ‘Royal Suite’ covers an impressive 780 square metres, and the four poster canopy bed rotates. We’re not sure why you’d need a rotating bed, but it sounds good.
“I’m staying at the Plaza.” Don’t you just wish to utter those words? We do. The Plaza, located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side (where else) is just minutes from world-famous shopping destinations including Barney’s, Bloomingdales and Bergdof Goodman. You’ll feel oh so Gossip Girl.
What is your dream hotel? Do you have a bucket-list of must-stay resorts?
